What is an Investment Teaser?

An investment teaser is a very short document that is packed full of information about your business. Whilst only usually being one to two pages, it contains all your company's main metrics - basically a very quantitative look at the current status and performance of your company.

Unlike a pitch deck, which can be more 'flowery' and include more narrative elements of your story, an investor teaser deck is very straight to the point and almost all facts and stats - it is jam packed with loads of numbers, graphs and P&L information. It acts as an executive summary of your important information that is hyper-relevant to investors, and acts as an overview of the key financials driving your business today.

It can be done as a PDF, excel document or PowerPoint presentation. The game is to try and fit as much grabby, relevant data on the deck as possible so that you can hook an investor and move them through the investment process.

How Investment Teaser Templates are Used in the Investment Process

At The Funding Guide our view is that the investment process has about 9 distinct stages and different materials are used at the different stages.

An investment teaser template is used to convert a cold investor to a warm lead and secure a pitch meeting - it is the document used at the very beginning of the process before a pitch deck or investment memorandum is created.

We recommend the following process for your investor teaser deck:

1. Create the investor teaser template using all your hardest hitting growth and financial data.
2. Download our Investor Lists and create a short list of investors by matching your business to their mandate.
3. Use contact details in the investor lists to reach out to the investors by LinkedIn and request a pitch meeting. Make sure this email is punchy and to the point - including what you are raising, when you want to raise and what series the raise is. Include your teaser deck as an attachment. This is a crucial step - investors receive a lot of inbound enquiry asking for meetings, and they need to filter through the contacts that are worth investing time on (and cull the ones that aren't) - attaching a teaser deck can show you are professional, serious about capital raising and worth looking at.
4. Sometimes investors might request a pitch deck prior to the pitch meeting. If they ask - you should send them a version that doesn't contain very sensitive commercial information - because you likely won't be under a mutual NDA agreement. If they don't ask for the pitch deck, they will give you a 30 min pitch meeting (and then sometimes ask for the pitch deck in advance). Whatever time they give you, make yourself available for that meeting (as they are extremely busy and keen to weed out businesses that aren't worth spending time on).
5. Once you have a pitch meeting (or if you've been asked for it in advance), prepare a pitch deck. This should be about 12-15 slides long. Here is a free resource helping you create a compelling pitch deck. Rehearse your pitch extensively.
6. Once you are through the pitch deck meeting, and the investor has confirmed they would like more information or would like to proceed, then it is at the more advanced stages of the investment process that you will need a investment memorandum template.
